I keep saying and suggesting folks to never leave your flash behind even during sunny days. I met with a good friend of mine at the parking lot of Ft. Desoto early morning. As we were setting up, he mentioned "why are you bringing the flash? It's going to be sunny" I simply said "You never know" and that's exactly what happened. We were presented with an amazing sunrise with few species feeding off the main pools. He continued walking as he knew it was very dark still. I stopped and created few images including this one. He than said "It's just an Ibis" overlooking the opportunities, but after the morning was over, we shared few images in the parking lot. He was in shocked when I showed him this image. All I said was.... "You never know man!" Because it was very dark and early, I knew my shutter speed was going to be very slow. I needed to be as steady as possible and with a little luck, the Ibis will pose for me long enough to create a single portrait. How did I get my flash settings?? Simple... I kept testing and testing the right flash settings while the Ibis was feeding, changing my flash settings from -1 all the way to -3. Once I knew my settings were correct, all I had to do is wait for the right moment and hope the sunrise reflecting on the water will last long enough. I was rewarded with this image. Lesson learned?? Never leave your flash behind. You never know!
