Greetings,

For the second time this year, I've been contacted by the folks of Nat Geo. This time around few images including a cover page for their upcoming Birds of North America Pocket Guide. I'm not much into the publishing thing but when Nat Geo knocks on my door, I can't ignore them. This pocket guide will be available by or before next April, 2013.

Things have been extremely busy for me. Lot's of traveling going on and quite frankly very little bird photography. I've been chasing some of the thing I've always wanting to do and photograph. You'll see few more images below.

I would like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Life is precious and sadly only one. Remember to always create memories..!!

Thank you!

Since I was a kid I've always wanted to be part of a Formula One Race. Well, I can now check that off my list as I had the pleasure of not only participating but also be able to photograph the event. For those not familiar with Formula One, this open wheel motor sport is the largest in the world with 20 Grand Prix around the world including Germany, Monaco, Canada, Japan, Italia, Abu Dhabi, Brazil, India, Korea, United States of America and several others. There is no other sport like it. It's an awesome experience!

As you can imagine such high profile sport comes with a great expense. Lodging in Austin was as high as $1,500 per night not to mention car rentals were sold out and so was the event. Some people stayed in San Antonio and Houston avoiding the high prices. I decided to take a more "natural" approach and decided to camp out which I love to do anyway. Total cost camping? $42 for 3 night/ 4days LOL! Weather was in the low 70's and 40's at night. It was PERFECT!!

I had a pretty good idea of what equipment to bring but I wasn't sure 100% since you never know if you'll get an opening. Many photographers were around but unfortunately many were blocked by the two fences you see behind me. I was lucky to be shooting from a lift machine that was around the track at turn 20. Perfect spot!

Here is the equipment list all inside a custom vest:

  • Canon 5D MKIII
  • Canon 1D MKIV
  • Canon 1.4x III Teleconverter (X2)
  • Canon 800mm L f/5.6 IS Lens
  • Canon 400mm L f/5.6 Lens
  • Canon 70-200mm L f/4 IS Lens
  • Canon 24-70mm L II Lens
  • Canon 17-40mm L f/4 Lens

Lot's of gear but worth the efforts!

Hope to visit the race again next year!

I've been using the Bumping Technique for quite some time now and has been my favorite technique photographing fast moving subjects including birds in flight. After using the same technique photographing the Formula One, I'm convinced that this technique works every single time! It's awesome!

Imagine trying to photograph these fast moving cars hand-holding a 800mm lens attached to a 1.4x III teleconverter and the 1D MKIV while hitting the driver's helmet. This was all possible by simply following every step of the graph above.

During my workshops I explain how I achieve the same results step by step and within great details.

Hope you like them.

Thanks!
