What can I say....We kicked some serious butt in San Diego during my 4 days workshop. I got back with a little over 8,000 images even after deleting every night at the hotel. We were treated with amazing weather!!

Our trip began photographing the beautiful California Pelicans in full breeding colors. specially after

Without a doubt, San Diego has become one of my favorite places to create images using flash. The image above was created while scouting different locations before my workshop. Thanks to my flight cancelled courtesy of American Airlines, I didn't get much sleep the night before. However, that didn't stop me from getting up early. I knew what I wanted to do and the images I had in mind even before I left Florida. I could not let a bad flight stop me!

There are three reasons I get to a location way before sunrise.

  • One: I want to get there before the birds get there. This allows the birds to get comfortable with my presence.
  • Two: I have time to set my flash and Better Beamer exactly the way I want it. This sometimes can take a little longer then what I would like but as you can image, every situation/location is different.
  • Three: I have time to explore and master new techniques.

Slowly but surely, I moved in closer and closer. I knew using my tripod would scare my subject away specially when is dark out. Hand-holding my camera, flash and lens was the only option. If you look at the image below, it will give you a good idea of the situation and habitat. Notice what my support was!

When there is no sunlight during early morning or later afternoon, your shutter speed gets very slow, in this case at 1/60 sec. That shutter speed allowed me to expose the twilight properly and the flash settings allowed me to lit my subject bright enough to pull details from the whites and darks. Pushing the histogram to the right (highlights) as much as possible without over-exposing my subject. It's important to have highlights alert enable in your camera so you can see when you are over-exposing an image. AKA "Blinkies".

Now that I have a pretty good idea of my exposure, now is the time to play with the flash. In this case using the Better Beamer to -2 with a zoom of 50mm was sufficient. During my workshops, sometimes participants pick up the technique very quickly, while others need more help. However, that's why participating in a workshop is very helpful.

I will be announcing my 2013 San Diego workshop dates very soon. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone looking to improve your bird photography techniques!
