Canon 5D MKII, Canon 17-40mm L @ f/8, 12 sec, ISO 100
Manual and single exposure, Induro CT414 Tripod
2011 was a year to remember. What an amazing year!! Let 2012 be even better with much success and fun for everyone. Thank you for your support!!
Here we have a single exposure image created using the 5D MKII and 17-40mm L lens in Manual Mode. White balance was set to Tungsten in Photoshop RAW converter but shot using Daylight.
This is the perfect example why I push participants to learn more and more Manual Mode. Learning how to read your histogram will help you achieve more accurate exposures allowing you to control highlights and darks evenly.
Happy New Year everyone!

My Hand Holding Technique - Maxis Gamez - All Rights Reserved
The above image clearly shows the reason why I rotate the lens tripod ring to the left side of the lens. Notice how I hold the lens with my thumb and fingers. This helps me balance the camera and lens preventing any extra and unwanted movement. This is true for ANY lens including my Canon 800mm L.
Bobcat images were created using the same technique at a very low shutter speed for such large magnification (1280mm total) due to poor lighting conditions. However, the images are sharp and well exposed.
Few other tips to consider:
- Use your tripod ring as support to balance your camera and lens (A). Do not grab the lens. Let it sit on top of your fingers.
- Keep your elbow firmly close to your body (B), this will allow you to have extra support and will also help you pan for a longer period of time.
- Apply pressure to your camera's viewfinder with your forehead (C). This will help you aim for your subject.
- Before you start shooting, pay close attention to your background from any distractions. I like to keep my background clean from anything that can take away from my subject.
I hope this helps!
