2011 In Pictures | Maxis Gamez | All Rights Reserved

Another year has gone by. 2012 will be my 3rd season leading workshops & seminars in Florida and other areas. What an amazing experience this has been.

I wanted to thank newsletter readers and workshop participants for believing in my images, knowledge and efforts continuing delivering workshops at a very affordable cost. At the age of 34, I could not be happier. Many more years to come!!

THANK YOU!!

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Unfortunately, I wish I had better news and images from my second attempt to photograph few islands at the wonderful 10,000 Islands. I was treated with a wonderful sunset as I was setting camp. However, due to other circumstances and the fact that the sun never came back out the following morning, I was pretty much forced to leave camp and paddle back home. I was able to create this image using my Canon S95 with a GND filter, hand-held.

Let's hope I have better luck next time around.

The Canon 5D MKII continues to deliver photographing birds in flight. I've been working on my full frame capabilities to see if adopting the new 1D X makes sense as I will be loosing the much loved 1.6 crop factor with the 800mm lens.

Choosing the perfect day will help the focusing system deliver better results. For both images I used all 9 focusing points. Bumping the AF allowed me to press the shutter button few frames before these images were created.

Here are few things to consider:

  • Wind - You want the wind coming from behind you. Birds will land facing you.
  • Sun - You want the sun coming from behind you as well. Birds will get lit completely.
  • Tripod - Level your tripod. Your Wimberley will perform smoother.
  • Talking - Stop talking if you are shooting with your friends. Focus!

There is no doubt in my mind that one of the first things I look for during my approach process is the background. Look at the "Junk" image. Noticed how the background is split on two. Green and brown creating a huge distraction.

Getting lower... a LOT lower, allowed me to concentrate on the "Green" area and eliminate splitting the image in two.
