The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) is a tool to help with the planning of all types of outdoor photography, but particularly landscape and urban scenes.

It is a map-centric sun and moon calculator: see how the light will fall on the land.

TPE's map-based approach means you are not limited to a predefined list of locations, which often don't include the places many photographers go. Instead, search for any place name on the planet or position the map pin exactly where you want it.

Last year I was introduced to this software. After using the software for few weeks, my creativity started to kick-in. My first target? The Skyway Bridge image you see above!

The software is very simple to use. All I did was to find the location I had in mind, in this case the Skyway Bridge and let the software tell me exactly the best time of year to be there, but I wasn't alone to share the experience.

During this windy, cold but clear morning, I was able to share the opportunity with a private class participant. She was very happy to witness such event take place right in front of our cameras and while the temperatures dropped drastically, we had the perfect clear conditions!

I highly recommend downloading and learning the software as it can help your next one of a kind image!

Recently I had an opportunity to photograph Sandhill Cranes at full force. I have hundreds of close ups, portraits, silhouettes and nesting images but I didn't have many "action" images. I trusted my 7D's 19 focusing points to get the job done. While I normally don't use all 19 points, I'm really glad that I did here as the camera tracked the action with great success!!

Overall, the 7D continues to deliver! (in the right hands.... [smile])
