Greetings,

Our workshop started with a calm and beautiful morning at Alafia Banks. We had the perfect wind direction for a few hours but conditions deteriorated around 10am with gusty 25mph winds and choppy seas. However, we took full advantage of the good weather and create several in flight and on ground Spoonbill images before heading back to the dock. Migratory birds were all over the place at De Soto which opened several opportunities to create many images feeding and in flight.

Our second morning was extremely challenging as the fog was dense. Workshop participants were brave and were also able to keep up. The afternoon boat session was also extremely challenging as the stormy clouds were in and out making difficult to achieve a good exposure. We also had some light rain while on the boat but that didn’t stop us from creating good images.

Despite the challenging conditions we managed just fine. Thank you all workshop participants for their hard work and efforts! You guys rock!

I’ve been photographing these owls for a few years now and I have to say that this has been the most productive trip yet. We were able to photograph the owls posing for us, feeding, and interacting with each other. But the icing of the cake… days old owlets! What a successful workshop!

Exciting opportunities for May as the owlets will grow and play all day long, hopefully allowing us to create several images.

If you are interested in photographing the owls with me next month, please contact me right away as I’m limiting this workshop to 4-5 people. (Burrowing Owls Workshop - May 11-12, 2013)

Thanks!

12 Hrs of Sebring, Sebring, Florida - Maxis Gamez, All Rights Reserved

Using the Canon 5D MKIII at the recent 12hrs of Sebring was incredible. The new AF System performed fantastic. Fast subject locking and tracking. Of course I made a few changes to the AF on site which helped keep up with these fascinating race cars.

Changing my AF setting from AF Default to AF Accel./decal. Tracking, made all the difference in the world. AF locked on my subjects quickly and accurately. In fact, I’ve left the same settings for bird photography and so far, so good. I’ll be doing more testing this weekend during my Gatorland’s Rookery Workshop.

I've also changed the focusing points selection to AF Point Expansion using the camera’s joystick to the proper location for a pleasant composition.

All images created with the 5D MKIII, Canon 800mm f/5.6 L IS and 70-200mm f/4 IS L lens on a monopod.

Hope you like the images.

Thanks!
